This summer teens learned about the basic elements of design and how to research, sketch out their ideas, and finally how to communicate those ideas using a 3D modeling program called SketchUp.  These videos show the teens work as they learned how to use SketchUp by recreating a room in their own home. Their second project involved using research to design and create their own sign. Their final project utilized the skills they have been developing over the summer to design and create a scenic design for a musical or play. Each video has a description underneath that explains what the final project musical or play is and a bit about the design concept.

Please take a look at the videos below to see all three projects for each teen.

Daniella Castillo

I chose to do a scene from the movie Princess and the Frog if it were to be presented as a musical on stage. This is the scene when the main characters are on their way to meet Mama Oldie.

Patrick Conlon

I chose to do a scene from Elsa's Ice Castle from the movie Frozen 1. This scene features a two way curved staircase made out of ice that has a platform at the top with enough space to use for performing like singing and dancing. It has a false proscenium located downstage made of icicles, and is masked with curtains all the way around the stage

Josh Healing

She Kills Monsters, a play that takes place half of the time in real life Ohio locations, and the other half inside the game Dungeons and Dragons. My concept for the dungeons and dragons world is that the set, the physical element, would look like the dungeon and dragon game itself. It's rocky and not very colorful, and the lighting design is more representative of the imagination involved in the game, it brings the majority of the color and paints the set, the way the imagination of the players paints the physical aspect of the game

Effie Kodric

My set design is for the broadway show Rent and is inspired by the lifestyle of people living in East Village of New York in the 1990's.

Rakia Jackson

This was inspired by wicked the musical which is why you see the clock and the smoke, I added a twist to it and it made a character pick a decision to either live life day by day let time heal all evil or just leave  through the door and let it be the end of time/life

Jamelah Lewis

This is the "Miss Teenage Hairspray of 1962" scene from the production "Hairspray", where just before Inez is crowned Miss Teenage Hairspray, Tracy and her friends take over the show with the final dance number of the show. My idea behind my design was to recreate the big spray can and design my own platforms, sign, and background.

Rachel Mulick

This set is of the fairylands (specifically Titania the fairy queen's domain) from A Midsummer Night's Dream. I wanted the set to look magical and regal. I made Titania's bed reminiscent of a throne, complete with a sweeping canopy. To finish it off I added colorful trees and many flowers to make it feel more magical and whimsical. This set is meant to give the impression of stepping into another world filled with magic and ruled by a powerful queen.

Megan Riordan

I picked the musical Wicked. Specifically the song Popular. I really wanted to highlight that they come from 2 different words their differences is what makes them connect and understand each other. That is why I have cogs and gears everywhere but still have the big color difference.

Julie Thai

The show is Chicago and the number is "Cell Block Tango." I choose this because it glorifies crime but also shows how people only care about a good story. It highlights how people don't necessarily care for the truth but care about sensationalism. It's a reflection of our own moral integrity what society values. I also just really like this song.

Monserrat Tlatilpa

The Project I did was a scene from the musical Heathers called "Big Fun''. I chose this musical because it's comedic and interesting and sad. I chose this scene because it's basically what teen years look and it's funny.

Leah Williams

This is my version for the set of West Side Story, specifically during scenes that take place in Doc's Candy shop. I chose to do West Side Story because I'm very fond of the musical and thought it would be nice to add to it.
